Its stores will also limit the number of customers in the store at any one time, while the number of tills open will be reduced to allow greater distance between customers. We are committed to serving customers and encouraging social distancing when people shop. We would like to thank all our customers for their support and understanding and urge them to follow the government advice to stay at home and only shop for essential items. 1.55pm GMT The Downing Street lobby briefing has just finished. The prime minister’s spokesman said that the police will be given the power to fine people who break the rule about holding gatherings of more than two people in public.
