Police can no longer dictate who can attend party conferences without good cause after my win in the high courtAt 5.26pm on 19 September 2017 an unexpected email landed in my inbox, a matter of days before the Labour party’s annual conference in Brighton was due to begin. It informed me that – despite never having been arrested, convicted, charged or otherwise reprimanded by any police force – I had not passed the “necessary police security checks” to attend the event.The Labour party assured me it had accepted my application months previously, but security checks were a matter for the police.
