{"id":24302,"date":"2018-01-17T14:49:35","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T13:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theworldwidejournal.com\/2018\/01\/17\/keira-knightley-criticises-rape-culture-in-modern-cinema\/"},"modified":"2018-01-17T14:49:35","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T13:49:35","slug":"keira-knightley-criticises-rape-culture-in-modern-cinema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theworldwidejournal.com\/?p=24302","title":{"rendered":"Keira Knightley criticises rape culture in modern cinema"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking about #MeToo and Hollywood, the actor says there is \u2018something distasteful in the way women are portrayed\u2019 Keira Knightley has criticised the amount of sexual violence against women in films, saying that she prefers period stories to contemporary-set dramas because, in the latter, \u201cthe female characters nearly always get raped\u201d.In an interview with Variety, Knightley was explaining her preference for \u201chistorical pieces\u201d in the run-up to the premiere of her Colette biopic \u2013 set during the Parisian belle \u00e9poque \u2013 at the Sundance film festival. \u201cI always find something distasteful in the way women are portrayed [in films set in the modern day], whereas I\u2019ve always found very inspiring characters offered to me in historical pieces.\u201d She acknowledged, however, that there has been some improvement in \u201cthe last few years\u201d as the Hollywood mood change has meant that \u201cwomen\u2019s stories are suddenly viewed as important\u201d.
