The memorial is not easy to find, set back from the cemetery path behind another row of gravestones.The grave itself has fallen into a state of disrepair. A creeping green stain has overtaken the crumbling stonework, some of the iron posts and chains are missing and the lettering is now indistinct. Still, the final resting place of M\u00e9li\u00e8s has become a place of pilgrimage for many, who come from around the world to leave tributes. \u201cEach time I visit it\u2019s like a little new adventure,\u201d says his great-great-granddaughter Pauline Duclaud-Lacoste.
